Playing in the International Association, the Indianapolis Westerns became the first professional baseball team in Indianapolis in 1876. The following year, the Westerns won the International Association pennant and changed their name to the Indianapolis Blues, in reference to the color on their uniforms.

A year later the Blues joined the National League. Still playing at South Street Park, the Blues were managed by John Clapp.

The Blues did not have much success in their only National League season, finishing fifth among six teams, with a record of 24-36. The Blues top hitter was Orator Shafer, who batted .

338, while the Only Nolan was their regular pitcher with a record of 13-22 and an ERA of 2. 57.

A decade later Indianapolis would again get a NL team, named the Hooisers that would only play three seasons.
