With the folding of the American Association, the St. Louis Brown Stockings are among the four teams that are accepted into the National League.

In their first season in the NL, the Brown Stockings struggle to finish with a 56-94 total record in a split season. One matter of note, they hosted the first Sunday game on April 17th, losing to the Cincinnati Reds 5-1.
